In 1957, brothers Alan & Clayton Naluai were attending Glendale Junior College in Glendale, California.
They were befriended by two other Hawaiians: percussionist Bernie Ching, and Pat Sylva, a multi-instrumentalist who could hold his own on the piano, vibes, ukulele, or trombone.
Both Pat & Bernie sang as well.
The quartet began performing in backyard luau in southern California, but over the next couple of decades, they made numerous recordings, and played top engagements both home in Hawaii and on the mainland!
Their trademark 4-part harmony remains unique and memorable.

Richard Kauhi Quartette
The Richard Kauhi Quartette first recorded on Bell Records in the summer of 1948.
The group featured leader Richard Kauhi on piano, Johnny Costello on bass, Jimmy Kaku on cocktail drums, and Mark “Sonny” Kamaka on guitar.
Their hybrid jazzy sound featured flawless four-part harmony vocals, driven by intricate piano arrangements.
It was Hawaiian music, influenced by the likes of the Nat Cole Trio, the Page Cavanaugh Trio, the Merry Macs, and George Shearing.
Today, we’ll celebrate the re-release of the Cord International Compact Disc featuring their 1948 Bell Records recordings.

Kalima Brothers
The Kalima Brothers rambunctious “1,000 Pounds of Melody” sound featured solid multi-part harmonies, embellished with intricate ‘ukulele, piano, and steel guitar solos, and was propelled by a rollicking “Katchi-katchi” danceable beat.
The group included Jesse Kalima on ‘ukulele, Albert Kalima on bass, Willard “Honey” Kalima on guitar, Daniel “Junior Kalima” Kaho’opi’i on Maraccas & vocals, Julian Gasper on Steel Guitar, and Richard Kauhi on piano.

Hilo Hattie
Kalala Maleka Haili was educated and trained to be a school teacher.
In 1935, she started moonlighting at Waialae Country Club.
She began singing and dancing Don McDiarmid’s song, “When Hilo Hattie Does The Hilo Hop”.
Soon Harry Owens discovered her, and she was making records and appearing in films.
She even legally changed her name to “Hilo Hattie”.
And today, nearly 30+ years after her passing, her name is immortalized by a Hawaii garment retailer.

Johnny Kaonohi Pineapple
David Kaonohi was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 11, 1906.
After attending Oregon State University, he began his career as a Hawaiian entertainer on the Mainland.
David Kaonohi would settle in New York City, and become known as, “Johnny Kaonohi Pineaaple”, and exponent of Hawaiian Swing in the late 1930s, and an exponent of Hawaiian Calypso in the 1950s.
