Classic Rerun - Jon & Randy 1975

In 1975, Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwo’ole Osorio was just 23 years old.
But Randy Kamuela Borden was just 22 years old.
The two individual performers came together to perform as one….creating a kaleidoscope of moods and sounds of contemporary Hawaii.
Jack de Mello recorded the pair as J&R Incorporated in 1975.
So we’ll dive into our records archives to hear our favorite Jon & Randy music from 1975.

Classic Rerun - Genoa Keawe 1966

In 1966, Genoa Keawe was unhappy with the deals being offered by the local record companies.
She was urged to start her own record company by friends Phil and Edith Helsley, and Genoa got a $25,000 loan from First Hawaiian Bank.
Genoa’s husband and her family helped to take care of the children while she produced and distributed her own records.
Very hands on, Genoa handled much of the bookkeeping and public relations herself.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite Genoa Keawe Records music from her 1st two recordings in 1966.

Classic Rerun - Hui Ohana - 1972

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we bring back some of our most requested shows for Classic Rerun. Enjoy!
In 1972, the group “Hui Ohana” exploded upon Hawaiian music scene with their debut record, “Young Hawaii Plays Old Hawaii”.
The trio featured fraternal twin brothers Ledward & Nedward Ka’apana, with their cousin, Dennis Pavao.
With breathtaking guitar work, engaging bass runs, and amazing falsetto vocals, the group brought Hawaiian music back to its roots.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite “Hui Ohana” recordings from their debut June 26, 1972 recording session.

Classic Rerun - Sonny Kamahele - 1963

Solomon “Sonny” Kamahele, Jr. was a Hawaiian musician’s musician.
His father, Solomon Kamahele, Sr., achieved great success in the 1st decades of the 20th century as a recording artist and entertainer.
Sonny Jr served Hawaii as a distinguished and charming ambassador of Aloha both here and in Hollywood.
In 1996, Sonny Kamahele received the Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award.
We lost Sonny on February 11, 2004.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite Sonny Kamahele music from his 1963 solo release, Sonny Kamahele & his Surf Serenaders.

Classic Rerun- Hilo Hawaiians 1960

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we bring back some of our most requested shows for Classic Rerun. Enjoy!
In 1960, the Hilo Hawaiians recorded their debut album, “Honeymoon In Hawaii”, while they were on tour in Chicago.
The album became quite popular, originally released with a deluxe 58-page, full-color collectable booklet.
Bunny Brown played guitar, while Kihei Brown and Mona Kalima played ukulele.
Puni “Buddy” Brown played stand-up bass, and Arthur Ka’au’a played steel guitar.
All of the Hilo Hawaiians contributed vocals.
These Hawaiian music legends are gone now, but not forgotten.
Today, almost 60 years later, we’ll share this memorable music with you.
