Alfred Aholo Apaka

Just over 50 years ago, at 11:25 am on January 30, 1960, Alfred Aholo Apaka, formerly known as Alfred Aiu Afat, died suddenly while playing paddle ball at the Central YMCA.
His death came at the peak of his exploding career.
A TV pilot project starring Alfred had just been sold to a sponsor, assuring him of national TV exposure.
Alfred Apaka appeared to be on the verge of becoming a worldwide phenomenon.

Halona

A young quartet made their historic debut recording in December of 1977.
“Halona”, consisted of:
Jack Ha’o – leader & piano
Manu Palama – ukulele
Kaulana Kasparovitch – guitar
Kimo Alama – upright bass & ipu
All four members shared the solo and harmony vocals on all of the songs.
Kimo, Kaulana, & Manu were all kumu hula so the music reflected their love of hula.
Their album was appropriately titled, “Chalangalang”, perfectly describing the musical content.

Hilo Hawaiians

The Hilo Hawaiians traveled the world playing their Hawaiian music.
Honing their talents in the choir of the famed Haili Church in Hilo, Hawaii, their traditional Hawaiian music featured their rich harmonies.
Bunny Brown, Kihei Brown, Mona Kalima, Puni Kalima, and Arthur Kaua knew each other their entire lives, and that unity was reflected in their music.

Kihei Brown

Thomas Kihei Desha Brown was born in Hilo, Hawaii on January 30, 1925, and we lost him on September 11, 1978.
Kihei Brown was only 53.

Mikilani Fo & Ilima Baker

Two young wahine became featured entertainers in Waikiki very early in their lives.
Mignon Violanthy K. Fo, aka: Mikilani Fo, became a star of a nightclub floor show in her early 20s before traveling to New York City in 1950.
Ilima Baker Aylett, aka: Ilima Baker, became a featured singer at the Niumalu Hotel while still a senior at Sacred Hearts Academy, also in the early 1950s.
