The majestic Moana Hotel rose in 1901 and was by far the largest structure in Waikiki at that time.
An Indian banyan tree was planted in the courtyard of the Moana Hotel in 1904.
Eventually, the tree stood 75 feet high, with a canopy spreading 150 feet across and a trunk circufrance of 40 feet.
For 14 years, Pua Almeida performed nightly at the Moana Hotel Banyan Court with his Sunset Serenaders.
Today, we’ll premiere a brand new Cord International compact disc of Pua Almeida & his group performing there live on July 23, 1966.

Bill Akamuhou
William Akamuhou Dias, Sr. was born on March 16, 1917 in Nawiliwili, Kauai, and we lost him at the age of 68, on March 31, 1985 in Honolulu.
Young Bill was just 8 years old when his Mother died, and only 13 when his Dad passed away.
Bill turned to music for comfort, and excelled with the Lihue Hawaiian Church Choir.
After working as a mechanics helper by day and as a member of the Rapoza Brothers musical group by night, Bill was discovered by Al Kealoha Perry, and recruited to join the famed Hawaii Calls radio show in Waikiki.
Bill’s deep & rich bass voice was featured on numerous recordings with Al Kealoha Perry’s Singing Surfriders. Eventually he formed Bill Akamuhou’s Nautical Hawaiians and enjoyed more performance & recording success during WWII and on into the 1950s.

Lucky Luck
Robert Melvin “Lucky” Luck was a familiar name in local entertainment to Hawaii residents, but his birthplace was actually Waco, Texas.
Lucky’s fascination for Polynesia began while he was a US Marine stationed in Pago Pago, Samoa.
There he mastered the language enough to serve as an interpreter during World War II.
Honolulu later became his home, and he raised his family here, while he became a favorite media star of the 1950s and 1960s.

Agnes Malabey Weisbarth
Agnes Kealanohea Malabey was born on September 20, 1922 and we lost her, at the age of 55, on October 3, 1977.
Her hanai mother, Ida Malabey, was a noted composer, singer, and dancer.
Aggie Malabey Weisbarth was known for her many radio broadcasts with the “Transit Hawaiians” in the 1940s, and for her popular recordings for the 49th State record label.
Aggie also headlined many long engagements at the Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, Princess Kaiulani, and Kahala Hilton hotels.

Ray Andrade
Raymond George Andrade was born on April 14, 1913 in Honolulu, and we lost him on January 24, 1999 in Newark, Alameda, California, at the age of 85.
Ray Andrade was a handsome and dapper bandleader with a flair for the dramatic in his musical arrangements.
A charter member of the Harry Owens Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra, he also became one of the first vocalists on the “Hawaii Calls” radio show.
After WWII, Ray began a two-decade-long career performing in nightclubs both in Hawaii, and on the mainland.
