Sol K. Bright

Solomon (Kolomone) Kamaluhia Kekipi Ke Ali’ika’apuni Ku Keala Oka Mahanahana Bright was born on November 9, 1908 and we lost him at the age of 83 on April 27, 1992.
He began as a drummer for his sister Hannah Bright’s orchestra.
Sol Ho’opii recruited the teenaged Sol Bright to join Ho’opii’s mainland combo as the 2nd steel guitarist.
Sol K. Bright would go on to a long and successful career as a songwriter and perfomer.

Sterling Mossman

Sterling Edwin Kilohana Mossman, Waikiki’s Crown Prince of Comedy, lived from February 3, 1920 to February 21, 1986.
A detective with the Honolulu Police Department by day, and the central character of the famed “Barefoot Bar” at the Queen’s Surf on Waikiki Beach by night, Sterling Mossman is lovingly remembered as, “The Hula Cop”.
Sterling Mossman combined impressive singing talent with hilarious comedy and novelty songs, and surrounded himself with a sterling group of talented Waikiki entertainers.
He sang, danced the hula, and told uproarious jokes.
Sterling Mossman held court at the Barefoot Bar from 1952 to 1969.

Leinaala Haili

Jesse Makanui Leina’ala Amaral went from singing as a 9 year old girl in Lahaina, Maui, to performing as Leina’ala Haili for audiences on stages all over Waikiki.

Hui Ohana

A young Big Island trio took Hawaiian music by storm in 1972.
Two fraternal twin brothers, Ledward & Nedward Ka’apana, had teamed up with their cousin, Dennis Pavao early in the Hawaiian Renaissance.
Hui Ohana awakened a generation of Hawaiian music fans to the beauty of Hawaiian male falsetto singing, and Hawaiian slack key guitar.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorites of the group’s earliest recordings.

Gabby Pahinui

Charles Kapono Kahahawai, Jr. was born in Kaka’ako, O’ahu, on April 22, 1921, and he passed away at the age of 59 on October 13, 1980.
When he was six years old, he was renamed Charles Philip Pahinui by his hanai parents, Philip & Emily Pahinui.
“Gabby” Pahinui attended McKinley High School until he was 15.
Soon, he married Emily Kauha in 1937 and had 13 children.
A professional musician since he was 11 years old, he was an icon who’s free-spirited and unabashed ways endeared him to both young and old.
“Gabby” Pahinui is remembered today as the premier exponent of the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.
Today, we’ll celebrate his early recorded legacy with rare recordings from the 1950s.
