Bill Murata was with us from 1923 to 1983.
Bill produced more than 100 record albums over a period of 30 years. His albums won 6 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in the first 5 years of the Hoku’s existence, before his untimely death at the age of 60.

In 1979, Kokua Records released an album produced by Nancy Gustafsson and Victor Rittenband called, “Hawaiian Happening”, featuring The Naipo Serenaders.
The Naipo Serenaders consisted of George Kahulanui Naipo on bass & vocals;
His wife, Charlene Ku’uipo Naipo on guitar & vocals;
And his cousin, Alma Kalahikiola Ahuna on piano & vocals.
While performing at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel in Waikiki, they recorded this album.

The 1920s were a time of new prosperity, where the young Territory of Hawaii built the full grown city of Honolulu.
While Johanna Wilcox became the 1st woman to register to vote in Hawaii, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalani’anaole passed away.
KGU became Hawaii’s 1st radio station. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the Hawaii Theatre, the Aloha Tower, and the Honolulu Stadium all opened.
“May Day Is Lei Day in Hawaii” was created.
But the Great Depression would close the decade, and the Territory of Hawaii would never be the same.

Classic Rerun - Andy Iona - 1934-36

Andrew Aiona was born in Honolulu on January 1, 1902.
After losing his right thumb in an accident, he was sent from Kamehameha Schools to the Reformatory For Boys.
Under the tutelage of Mekia Kealakai and Henri Berger, he became an accomplished saxophonist.
Eventually, he journeyed to the mainland US, where he excelled first with his saxophone, and later became an acclaimed steel guitarist.
He performed and recorded extensively.
In this program, almost 85 years later, we’ll share this memorable music.

In 1964, Hula Records released an album produced by Don McDiarmid, Jr. called, “Hawaiian Style”, featuring The Kahauanu Lake Trio.
The Kahauanu Lake Trio consisted of
Kahauanu Lake on ukulele & vocals; his brother, Tommy Lake, on acoustic stand up bass & vocals; and Al Machida on acoustic guitar and vocals. And for this recording, Al Ka’ailau was featured on electric guitar.
While performing at the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, they recorded this album.
