“The Congress of the Hawaiian People” produced the event, funded by entertainer Don Ho.
Many of the young people who were featured on this memorable 1973 recording have gone on to contribute through their entertainment careers to the perpetuation of Hawaiian music & culture – exactly what the producers wanted to accomplish.

Emerson Brothers

Phillip Andrew Emerson was born on October 9, 1951, and his brother Kenton Robert Emerson was born on September 15, 1953.
Living in the San Francisco bay area, the boys began playing guitar, focusing on folk and blues material.
Drawn to vintage Hawaiian 78rpm Hawaiian recordings, they learned to emulate the players of the 1920s and 1930s on vintage instruments.
Ron Jacobs gave them their big break in 1978 by including their recording on the “HomeGrown III” album.
In 1979, Mountain Apple released “The Emersons”, in the same year that Territorial Airwaves was launched.
Today, we’ll celebrate the early recorded legacy of the Emerson Brothers from the Territorial Airwaves archives.

Decca Hi-Fi

An American branch of the British record company, Decca Records, was launched in 1934.
Soon, numerous Hawaiian stars were recording Decca 78-rpms in the 1930s and 1940s.
Decca embraced the new post-war record formats, adopting the 33 1/3-rpm LP in 1949, and the 45-rpm singles format a couple of years later.
As 78-rpms were phased out in the mid-1950s, the new formats used Hi-Fi technology, the pre-cursor to stereo.
Today, we’ll celebrate the early recorded legacy of Decca Hi-Fi from the Territorial Airwaves archives.
