“Hawaii Calls” shared memorable Hawaiian music on the radio airwaves for nearly 40 years, from 1935 to 1974.
The program made stars of many of Hawaii’s vocalists and musicians.
In the evening, many were featured in the top Waikiki hotels and showrooms:
The Monarch Room at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel;
The Banyan Court at the Moana Hotel;
The Tapa Room at the Hawaiian Village;
The Queen’s Surf;
And many others.

Likelike Weisbarth
‘Likelike’ Weisbarth was born in Haleiwa, of German and Hawaiian ancestry.
She lost both of her parents at an early age, so she was raised in the Salvation Army Home at 845 22nd Avenue, on the rise between Waialae and Kaimuki.
She graduated from Kalani High School in the first graduating class of 1961.
Then she and her husband, Frank Tomaselli, also raised at the orphanage, got a gig together at “Pat’s At Punalu’u”.
They were joined there by “Peachy” Espinda, one of their cottage parents at the orphanage.
In 1975, they recorded an album as: “Likelike & the Voices of Hawaii”.

Gabe Kila & Nanakuli Sons
Gabe Kila & the Nanakuli Sons were a very popular Hawaiian music combo in the 1970s.
The leader was born Gabriel K. Kilakalua, Jr. and he hailed from Nanakuli. He played ukulele.
Gabe “Kila” was his stage name in an era of limited Hawaiian language skills in audiences.
Dennis P. Keohokalole, from the Windward side, played bass. He used ‘Bla’ as his stage name.
Sterling Kalua, the organist, was from Nanakuli.
Jimmy Dawson, the drummer, hailed from Waipahu.
Together, their polished vocal harmonies, and tight nightclub act made them headliners at Dell Webb’s Kuilima Hotel.
In 1974, they recorded 2 albums: one in the studio, and one live at the White Whale Lounge at the Kuilima Hotel.

Marcella Kalua
Marcella Mokihana “Bozo” Kalua was born into a musical family in 1948, the 2nd of 4 daughters born to Marvallin Mokihana Kahalepuna Kalua of Pauoa, affectionately known as “Aunty Lala”.
Marvallin’s aunt was the famed singer, Madame Alapa’i.
Young Marcella began singing in the 4th grade at Pauoa Elementary School, and began to perform in numerous contests, benefits, her church, and even Aloha Week.
Makaha Records discovered her, and recorded her with the 1963 version of the Sons of Hawaii.

Emperor & Rick Hanapi
Emperor Alapai Hanapi was born on August 26, 1907, and we lost him at the age of 87 on July 27, 1995.
Although several of his siblings pursued careers in Hawaiian music, Emperor became a civil servant for the City and County of Honolulu.
His son, Rick Kawaihoa Hanapi, born in 1948, became the next generation Hanapi to perform Hawaiian music.
After the December 1980 passing of Emperor’s wife, Dolly, Rick invited his father into a recording studio to make a memorable recording together.
