Wainani Kanealii

Edith Wainani Kanealii was born in Honolulu on January 5, 1941.
She was the 5th of 15 children born to Rosalyn Lokalia Chow & Benjamin Ka’eha Kaneali’i.
In 1963, she recorded her debut album, “Songs of the Pacific”, on the Sounds of Hawaii label, in the Sounds of Hawaii studio at 1084 Young Street in Honolulu.
22 year old Wainani was joined in harmony by friends Iwalani Kahalewai & Lydia Wong, in an array of Hawaiian and Polynesian numbers.
Musicians in the session included Atta Isaacs and Benny Saks, arranged by Paul Mark.

Alfred Aholo Apaka - Limitless

Alfred Apaka lived from March 19, 1919 to January 30, 1960.
In his brief 20 year career, his performances and recordings made him one of the most beloved Hawaiian entertainers in history.
Although there is already one tribute show available at territoriaairwaves.com, we received a request from Poni & Lopaka Castrey to play some more of Alfred Apaka’s recordings.
In response, we’ll dedicate a new show to illustrate how Alfred’s talent was seemingly “limitless”.

Hawaii's Stars Present Hawaii's Youth

On April 1, 1973, very early in the “Hawaiian Renaissance”, a memorable concert was presented at the Honolulu International Center Concert Hall.
“The Congress of the Hawaiian People” produced the event, funded by entertainer Don Ho.
Many of the young people who were featured on this memorable 1973 recording have gone on to contribute through their entertainment careers to the perpetuation of Hawaiian music & culture – exactly what the producers wanted to accomplish.

MacKenzie Serenaders

Jimmie Healani MacKenzie started his MacKenzie Travel Organization in 1949 with $350.
MacKenzie Tours grew to be highly successful, and Jimmie became known as the “Mayor of Waikiki”.
Jimmie’s formula for selling Hawaii was to provide personalized service to visitors.
He also formed musical groups to play Hawaii’s music.
The MacKenzie Serenaders were Jimmie Healani MacKenzie, Danny Kenui Duvauchelle, Merle Kekuku, and Francis “Freckles” Lyons.

George Tautu Archer & his Pagans

Marcel Rene George Archer-Ceran was born in Tahiti in 1906.
Immigrating to Los Angeles, he finally moved to Hawaii and married Audrey Robinson of Paia, Maui, who had been born there in 1919.
George’s career had been focused on Tahitian music, but he & Audrey began composing hapa haole songs.
George built his group with Splash Lyons on steel guitar and Tommy Carter on vibes.
Bill Akamuhou Dias & Elissa Kroll were vocalists.
Dorothy Kahananui, “Jr.” wrote the harmony vocal arrangements, and sang as well.
