Soria, Jr., and Vicky Holt Takamine (back row). The very young 90-year old Kent Ghirard is credited with bringing synchronization to his hula line in both dress and movements in 1947, both of which have since become entrenched in the hula performed each year at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. Many of today's kumu hula are unaware of the contributions made so many decades ago by Kent Ghirard.
