Gary Aiko - Poina 'Ole 'Ia

Gary Aiko is the oldest of 12 children of Genoa Keawe.
Gary sold newspapers & shined shoes in his youth.
At age 15, he recorded a duet with his mother.
In 1957, he was a professional musician in Waikiki.
Gary Puniwai Keawe Aiko has gone on to perform around the world and make numerous recordings.
Today, we’ll focus on his brand new compact disc featuring songs from yesteryear, “Poina ‘Ole ‘Ia”.

R. Alex Anderson Hapa Haole Songbook

R. Alex Anderson graced our world from June 6, 1894 to May 30, 1995.
Yes, he lived to be one week short of his 101st birthday!
R. Alex Anderson’s hapa haole compositions may have been among the most distinctively Hawaiian ever recorded.
“Andy’s” songs share the Hawaii of his birth, with it’s unique people, places, and elements.
I have lovingly referred to him as the “Godfather of Hapa Haole Music”.
Today, we’ll focus on some of our favorite hapa haole tunes from the “Hapa Haole Songbook of R. Alex Anderson”.

Don McDiarmid Hapa Haole Songbook

Don McDiarmid was born in Stockton, California on June 10, 1898, and we lost him here in Hawaii on February 27, 1977.
In 1934, Don McDiarmid returned from a cruise through the South Pacific.
The successful musician was on his way home, but Harry Owens persuaded Don to join Harry’s Orchestra at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Don’s family relocated to Honolulu, and Don was soon a successful hapa haole songwriter and orchestra leader.
Don McDiarmid was a positive force in the careers of Hilo Hattie and Alfred Apaka.
Today, we’ll focus on some of our favorite hapa haole tunes from the “Hapa Haole Songbook of Don McDiarmid”.

Harry Owens Hapa Haole Songbook

Harry Owens lived from April 18, 1902 to December 12, 1986.
Harry Owens came to Hawaii in 1934 to re-organize the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra.
He re-arranged many traditional Hawaiian songs, and wrote scores of Hapa Haole songs.
But his biggest hit, “Sweet Leilani”, would win the Academy Award, and change his life forever.
We’ll focus on some of our favorite hapa haole tunes from the “Hapa Haole Songbook – Harry Owens”.
