Honolulu Students - 1904

Hawaiian musical ensembles began crisscrossing the continental United States in the 19th century.
Lui Thompson got his start playing in Mekia Kealakai’s Hawaiian Orchestra.
He later performed with Kealakai at the 1901 Buffalo World’s Fair, in Buffalo, New York.
In 1904, Thompson led a tour of the Honolulu Students across the Continent of the United States.
Also known as the Royal Hawaiian Troubadours, they were recorded during the tour in 1904.
Kilin Reece, Hawaii-based luthier, has discovered 12 discs featuring the combo of:
Lui Thompson Keouli, Fred W. Kahea, James Pekelo, David Ka’ai Kaleikoa, Madame Anehila, and William Holoua.
Kilin has released this restored collection on KR Records, available on KRStrings.com, and Kilin is with us today to share this music.

Lena Machado - Hana Hou

Lena Waialeale Machado was born in Honolulu on October 16, 1903.
We lost her on January 22, 1974, at the age of 70.
Her career spanned decades, and she was adored by fans both here in Hawaii and elsewhere around the globe.
She made numerous recordings, but in this program, we’ll focus on a Decca session she did in Hollywood on Thursday, September 23, 1937.
On December 18, 2015, we featured some of Lena’s recordings from the Hoku Award winning CD that we did with Cord International.
In this program, we’ll Hana Hou, and play another hour of her Decca releases, all recorded on Thursday, September 23, 1937.
From 1937, 82 years ago, we’ll share this memorable music.

Ray Kinney - Hana Hou

Raymond Leimona Kinney was born on September 26, 1901, in Kaumana, Big Island, Hawaii.
Ray Kinney passed away at the age of 71, on February 1, 1972.
Ray began his professional singing career at the age of 15, in 1915.
Ray played in numeorus nightclubs in his career, both here in the islands and on the mainland US.
He recorded dozens of records, the majority for Decca.
On April 26, 2013, we featured some of Ray Kinney’s recordings.
In this program, we’ll Hana Hou, and play another hour of his Decca releases, all recorded in 1935 and 1936.
From the 1930s, we’ll share this memorable music.

Lani McIntire - Hana Hou

Lani McIntire was born on December 15, 1904, in Honolulu, and we lost him on June 17, 1951.
He was only 46 years of age.
Lani was Dick Mcintire’s younger brother, and died just one month after Dick died.
Lani Mcintire achieved fame in Sol Hoopii’s trio before creating his own bands.
Lani played in numerous night clubs in his career.
He recorded dozens of records, the majority of which were for Decca Records.
On December 13, 2013, we featured some of Lani’s recordings, and on November 11, 2016, we shared some more of Lani’s recordings.
In this program, we’ll play yet another hour of Lani’s releases.

Dick McIntire - Hana Hou

Dixon Ka’aihue McIntire was born on April 6, 1902, in Honolulu, and we lost him on May 20, 1951.
He was only 49 years of age. Dick joined the US Navy in 1919, and ended up in California where he finished his service.
He then formed a trio in Los Angeles, and thrived.
Dick played in numerous night clubs in his career.
He recorded over 300 records, the majority for Decca Records.
On December 6, 2013, we featured some of Dick’s records, so we’ll Hana Hou!
In this program, we’ll play another hour of his Decca releases.
