Territorial Airwaves - "Along The Ala Wai" (6/22/2012)

From it’s earliest days, Waikiki was a paradise.
Fed by three streams from the Ko’olau, this vast ahupua’a formed a natural marshland and served as a breadbasket for the early Hawaiians.
By the late 1800s, others saw the commercial possibilities of Waikiki.
The pursuits of the wetland farmers on occasion conflicted with that of the emerging visitor industry.
In 1918, the Territorial Legislature appropriated $100,000 to dig the Waikiki Drainage Canal, later to be named the Ala Wai Canal, as the centerpiece of the Waikiki Reclamation Plan.
Join us now for “Along The Ala Wai”, as we share recordings by some of our favorite Waikiki entertainers!
