Charles Kapono Kahahawai Jr. was born on April 22, 1921.
He was hanai’d and renamed Charles Philip Kunia Pahinui.
In 1938, at the age of 17, Gabby married Emily.
They had 13 children.
Gabby was much in demand in the 1940s and 1950s, but as the 1960s began, his career had briefly cooled.
Dave Guard was born in Honolulu, and had always been a fan of Gabby Pahinui.
Dave achieved great success in the 1950s with the Kingston Trio.
In 1961, Dave Guard recruited engineer Bob Lang to record Gabby, with Sonny Nicolas and Danny Stewart to back him up.
They recorded in Central Union Church on Punahou Street.
We’ll share the resulting recording, “Pure Gabby”, with you.
