In 1966, Genoa Keawe was unhappy with the deals being offered by the local record companies.
She was urged to start her own record company by friends Phil and Edith Helsley, and Genoa got a $25,000 loan from First Hawaiian Bank. Genoa’s husband and her family helped to take care of the children while she produced and distributed her own records. Very hands on, Genoa handled much of the bookkeeping and public relations herself.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite Genoa Keawe Records music from her 1st two recordings in 1966.
