In 1974, Flair Records released an album called “Jesse Kalima and Sons, with Sonny Waiau”, featuring Jesse Kalima.
Jesse Kaleihia Andre Kalima was born on October 31, 1920, and we lost him at the age of 59, on July 13, 1980.
Jesse performed in the 1940s and 1950s with the Kalima Brothers, his family band, known as “1,000 pounds of melody”.
In 1974, Jesse was offered the opportunity to make this album with his sons.
For the recording, Jesse Kalima played ukulele and sang lead vocals.
His son, Jesse Jr., played bass and sang.
His other son, Dana, played drums and sang.
Jesse’s longtime keyboard player, Sonny Waiau, and spectacular guitarist, Pua Almeida, both sat in for the sessions.
Even Jesse’s sister, Dorothy Kalima Kanahele, sang a number.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite recordings from “Jesse Kalima and Sons” from 1974.
