Donald P. McDiarmid was born on June 10, 1898, in Stockton, California.
And we lost him at the age of 78, on February 27, 1977, in his adopted home of Honolulu, Hawaii.
In 1934, he passed through Honolulu after a South Sea cruise, only to be offered a position with the Harry Owens Orchestrra at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Don stayed, and eventually formed his own orchestra. He began to write successful Hapa Haole songs. And he released 8 of his hits on his own 78rpm record label in 1947, which he dubbed, “Hula Records”. His son, Don Jr., would later build that label much larger in the age of stereo LP records.
So we’ll dive into our 78rpm records archives to hear some of his classic recordings.
