James Leroy Lanakila Mo’ikeha was born on the island of Maui on December 6, 1935, the eldest of Solomon K. and Amy H. Cockett Mo’ikeha’s 5 children.
Jimmy 1st sang in public at the age of 5, and was soon winning Maui talent contests.
In 1947, he recorded 6 78-rpm discs for the 49th State Record Company, which were played on the radio by J. Akuhead Pupule in Honolulu.
As an adult, Jimmy juggled a career in hotel management while he continued to perform.
In 1963, he recorded an LP for Danco Records, featuring the original recording of “Behold La’ie”.
Jimmy Mo'ikeha is one of the 2015 inductees into the Lifetime Achievement Awards of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
