The 1930s opened in the midst of the great depression.
Families in Hawaii suffered the same hard times felt on the mainland. But by the mid-1930s, Hawaii was in full recovery. The weekly “Hawaii Calls” radio show went on the air, and the world discovered Hawaii.
The Kalani’anaole Highway opened, skirting the southeastern tip of O’ahu. Ala Moana Park and the Civic Auditorium were unveiled. The Kodak Hula show premiered and the first and regular air mail to the West Coast was inaugurated. Big Bands and electrified steel guitars exploded into Hawaiian music, and the Territory of Hawaii would never be the same again!
