Auguste Teri’imana Joseph Goupil was born on August 7, 1910, in Papete, Tahiti, Isles Du Vent, Pacific Islands.
“Augie” Goupil arrived in Hollywood from Tahiti in the mid-1930s and quickly befriended all of the Hawaiian musicians living and performing in the clubs and movies in the area.
Soon the Tahitian master drummer, singer, and dancer was working and recording in L.A., supplying high-spirited island-style soundtracks for Hollywood tropical movies.
The secret ingredient of his band’s sound was the Hawaiian professionals impersonating Tahitians.
